Swindon Clinical Commissioning Group says "Use NHS 111 this winter"

As the colder weather begins, people across Swindon are being urged to know the different NHS services available this winter. Healthcare providers want to make it as easy as possible for people to make the right choice about which service to use. The key message being shared with local people this year is to always phone NHS 111 first, instead of self-diagnosing or worrying about which local service is most appropriate.

NHS 111 can help people to get the right help, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Trained advisers will ask a series of questions before either signposting to a local service, arranging a face-to-face appointment or offering advice on self-care. The Walk-in Centre, located on the ground floor of the Swindon NHS Health Centre, remains open as usual seven days a week between 8am and 6pm.

Message from Diabetes UK’s Chief Executive and Head of Volunteering

As well as being the 85th anniversary of the founding of the charity by H G Wells and R D Lawrence, 2019 also sees the 80th anniversary of the founding of the first local group, which met in Leeds on 2nd March 1939 covering the whole of the west riding of Yorkshire. Its aims included a study of the economic and social aspects of living with diabetes so that they might better support people.

Chris Askew and Andy Broomhead write "Groups like yours are vital and provide help, support, information and guidance to people affected by diabetes in communities across the country. You raise awareness of diabetes, you campaign for better care and you support important research with your tireless fundraising. As we look at all the opportunities ahead to make a difference to the lives of all those people affected by diabetes, we can be both ambitious and hopeful thanks to the support of the many groups and individuals who share our vison – so thank you".  To commemorate the anniversary they have also supplied a certificate, which was exhibited at our December meeting.

Swindon Group has been in existence since at least 1987, when the Branch reformed under the chairmanship of Liz Angelinetta. In his address at the 1990 AGM, chair Sid Jefferies expressed some themes still relevant to today – a wish that more people would attend Group Meetings with a request that "everyone should tell their friends what a good team we are"!
